As Canadians, we know that sunshine is not always guaranteed north of the equator year round, particularly throughout the winter months. This lack of sunlight often results in a deficiency of vitamin D3, since the UV rays we get from the sun play an essential role in vitamin D3 production. Studies have shown that 1 in 3 Canadians is deficient in vitamin D, and 2 in 3 have less than the recommended level. Deficiency can manifest itself in symptoms such as low immune function, fatigue, muscle weakness, mood imbalances, osteoporosis in older adults and osteomalacia in children.
Vitamin D3 is necessary for many functions in the body. It plays a role in calcium absorption, immune function, mood health, skin health, cardiovascular function, hormone balance and that’s just to name a few. Taking vitamin D3 supplements is a great option for those who are deficient. However, most vitamin D3 supplements are synthetically derived from lanolin, a greasy substance found in sheep’s wool, which is not ideal for those who don’t consume animal by products.
